Epica es un grupo holandés de Gothic metal y Symphonic Metal que mezcla la voz mezzo-soprano de Simone Simons acompañada con guitarras melódicas y contundentes, usando en ocasiones voces guturales, coros y pasajes en latín.La banda fue fundada en abril del 2002 por el ex integrante de After Forever, Mark Jansen. En sus inicios la banda se llamó Sahara Dust y tenia como vocalista a la cantante noruega Helena Michaelsen que antes formo parte de Trail of Tears. En octubre de 2002, Mark Jansen invito a Simone Simons con apenas 17 años de edad (y su pareja en ese momento), para ser la vocalista definitiva.
